history

Previous routes and names

Bundesstrasse 24 emerged in 1949 from Reichsstrasse  24 (R 24), which had existed since 1934 . The R 24 began at the intersection with the R 2 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and led to the border at Griesen.

After Austria was annexed in 1938, the R 24 was via Lermoos ( R 309 ), Fernpassstraße , Nassereith ( R 309 ), Imst ( R 31 ), Landeck (R 31), Pfunds and Nauders to the Italian border at Reschen am See ( Reschenpass ) extended. Another extension took place in 1943 to Mals .

The R 24a branched off in Pfunds-Kajetansbrücke and led to the Swiss border at Vinadi on Hauptstrasse 27 . At Nauders, the R 24b also branched off towards the Swiss border at Martina .

Replacements

In 1991 the route from the confluence of the B 23 to the Austrian border was replaced by the federal highway 23 . The remainder in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen municipality was rededicated.
