history
prehistory
In earlier times the Engadiner Talstrasse did not follow the valley floor as it does today, but avoided difficult spots in the valley floor. This explains why the once important Punt Ota bridge on the border between Upper and Lower Engadine is now off the H27, or that the road below Zernez crossed the Inn with the so-called Justice Bridge and at the Fuorcha gallows until the end of the 18th century led past on the right side of the valley to Susch . For the same reason, the valley road in the Lower Engadine led through the villages of Guarda , Ftan and Sent , which are now high above the H27 , with the corresponding ascents and descents to the lower-lying villages of Ardez or Scuol in between.
For the maintenance of each section, the municipalities were responsible, which was accompanied by a claim of the communities on the transport monopoly: Longer transport over several communities without reloading or even continuous transports were rare, at least there was a certain distance transport of ore and salt from Hall to Chiavenna as well as a transit return freight of rice. Long-distance transport was also hampered by internal tariffs that were levied in Susch or Scuol, for example, until the 18th century.
There was no system of public susten and storage buildings, as is common in other areas of the Alps, even if, for example, the today disintegrated inn Chanoua (Rhaeto-Romanic for new house ) above Ardez was a kind of switch point in transport. Instead, goods were stored privately, including outdoors.
The old road was passable by vehicles, but easier for single-horse wagons than for larger carts. Often the transport was done by sledge , also because more workers were available for transport matters in winter than in the other seasons.
Today's lines
The Engadiner Strasse from Silvaplana to Martinsbruck was built in 1864–1865. This road construction is in the context of the construction of the modern Flüelapassstrasse (1866–67) and the construction of the first driveway over the Ofenpass (1871–72), two sections of today's main road 28.
Hauptstrasse 27 has been bypassing the towns of Celerina , Samedan , Bever , Madulain , Zuoz and S-chanf in the Upper Engadin since the 1980s .
Rock slide on December 23, 2019
On December 23, 2019, around 500 cubic meters of solid rock fell onto the Engadinerstrasse between Ardez and Scuol in a rock fall . As a result, the affected section of the route had to be closed for an expected three weeks.
