Zernez ( municipality in the Engiadina Bassa / Val Müstair region in the Swiss canton of Graubünden .
) is aOn January 1, 2015, the community merged with the previously independent communities Lavin and Susch . The new community is also called Zernez.
coat of arms
With the merger, Zernez received a new coat of arms for the entire municipality, which contains the main elements of the three former municipal coats of arms. The old coat of arms retained its validity as the village coat of arms.

The coat of arms reminds of the many bear stories from the woods of the community. At the same time, it also refers to the Planta family , who were of great importance to the community and had a bear's paw in their coat of arms.

The village of Zernez is located at an altitude of 1,474 m in the wide valley floor of the Engadine at the confluence of the Inn and Spöl rivers and has around 1,600 inhabitants, mostly Romansh- speaking. The place is the most important starting point for hikes in the Swiss National Park ; The Chamanna Cluozza hiking hut, for example, is a popular destination .
In addition to the village of Zernez with the Brail fraction and the hamlet Carolina, the municipality has also included the area of the former municipalities Lavin and Susch since early 2015 .

In 1880 84%, in 1900 79% and in 1941 78% of the citizens said Romansh (in the Vallader variant ) as their mother tongue. In the period after the Second World War, the proportion of Romansh fell further, but it is still the majority language. In 1990 81% and in 2000 80% stated that they knew Romansh. The Reformation was introduced in Zernez in 1553 .
Origin and nationality
Of the 1044 residents, 922 (= 88%) were Swiss citizens (as of the end of 2005).
history
Zernez was first mentioned in 1161 as Sarnetz .
After a major fire on September 5, 1872, which left only 40 of 157 houses undamaged, part of the village was rebuilt in the urban style and with flat roofs that are otherwise untypical for the Engadin.
During the Second World War , the Ova Spin and Crastatscha barriers were created in the vicinity of Zernez .
Attractions
Wildenberg Castle, which dates back to the 17th and 18th centuries, is located in Zernez . In the district of Runatsch there is an early baroque parish church from 1609 with rich stucco decorations .

In the tradition of nicknames for the Engadine villages , the Zernezer ils are called magliachognas (German for "the dog eaters").
The Burning Mountain Festival has been taking place in Zernez since 2011 at the end of June / beginning of July .
The Engadin Schlager- und Volksmusik Openair has been taking place every two years since 2017 .
traffic
Zernez is on the Bever – Scuol – Tarasp line , which connects to the Albula Railway . A PostBus line connects Zernez with Mals in the Italian Vinschgau . Hauptstrasse 27 also runs through the village .
