The Reformed Church ( Romansh in the idiom Vallader Baselgia Gronda = Great Church , and San Mauritius ) in Zernez in the Swiss Lower Engadine is a Grade II listed Evangelical - Reformed church on the hill above the village. Right next to it is the smaller San Bastian Church .

History and equipment

The church is first documented at the end of the 13th century under the patronage of Mauritius . Even before the outbreak of the turmoil in Graubünden (1618–1639), the new nave and the polygonal choir were built in 1607–09 as a foundation by Rudolf von Planta . A Romanesque tower with a pointed helmet, built around 1200, is attached to the south side of the facade .

Inside the church there are unusual stucco work in the early Baroque style for Graubünden , mainly with richly decorated fruit motifs. The organ from 1741 with a three-part front stands on a gallery above the choir , which dates to the years 1741/42. In the choir there is a communion table from 1725, around which there are several epitaphs of important Zernezer families.

In June 2012 the Graubünden Synod celebrated its 475th anniversary in Zernez. The baselgia gronda was the location of the opening ceremony, the Friday closed session and the Sunday synodal service.
