The Bündner Synod (formerly the Evangelical-Rhaetian Synod ) has existed since 1537 and is therefore one of the oldest synods in the area of Protestantism . It is an independent organ of the Evangelical Reformed Regional Church of Graubünden with the right of petition and application to the Evangelical Church Council ( executive ) and Evangelical Grand Council ( legislative ).

history

The purpose of its foundation was the creation of a professional body for reformed pastors . This should test new clergy in the canton , at that time still Alt Fry Rhaetia , on their faith and their way of life. The background to this was a strong influx of former Catholic clergymen from Germany and Italy who applied for positions in Graubünden , but who often only superficially turned to the Reformation , for example to circumvent celibacy .

Special synods

The Synod of 1618 in Bergün / Bravuogn went down in history as the one in which the politicizing militancy of the predicants prevailed and formed the prelude to the notorious Thusner criminal court . The Graubünden Synod was exposed to severe disputes and party struggles during the Herrnhut dispute in Graubünden . Due to precarious working conditions, the Graubünden leaders' strike of 1790 broke out a little later .

management

The synod is headed by a three-person dean's office (dean and two vice deans). Ideally, all three parliamentary groups of the Graubünden Synod are represented in the deanery: the theological working group, the working group for free theology and the religious-social group.

The Dean from 2006 to 2014 was Thomas Gottschall . At the synod in Castrisch at the end of June 2014 , Cornelia Camichel Bromeis from Davos was elected as his successor. She took up her position on January 1, 2015.

Course of the conference

The synod always meets from the Thursday before the last Sunday in June until the following Monday. Ordination (if not already done in another regional church ) and reception of the new pastors takes place in the Sunday service . Without this, no clergyman can work in Graubünden. The pastors who are active in the canton without being accepted into the synod are called provisors. Their preliminary activity is always valid until the following synod.

The synod is responsible for overseeing the pastors' administration. This means that she has the office of bishop in corpore . Their disciplinary resources include:

  • the reprimand,
  • the suspension and
  • expulsion from the synod.
