geography

Castrisch is located two and a half kilometers from Ilanz on the Vorderrhein at the entrance to the Rhine Gorge on the right side of the Vorderrhein Valley . Of the entire municipal area of 718 hectares, 368 hectares are covered by forest and wood. A further 293 hectares are used for agricultural purposes, 33 hectares are unproductive and 24 hectares are residential areas. The former municipality of Castrisch bordered on Ilanz , Riein , Sagogn , Schluein , Sevgein and Valendas .

Since December 2016, a bridge for non- motorized traffic has been connecting Castrisch with Schluein on the northern side of the Vorderrhein.

history

The earliest known mention of the place, in Castrices, comes from 765. The meaning of the name is uncertain. Possibly it goes back to the personal name Castricius , but a derivation from the Latin castrum "defense system" is also being considered.

The village church of St. Georg is mentioned for the first time in 840 as a Carolingian imperial property. Castrisch appears as a separate parish around 1340. In 1537 the community joins the Reformation and consequently separates from Sevgein , who remains Catholic. In 1137/39 nobles from Kästris are attested; The current ruins of Casti , east of the village, are believed to be their seat . In the late Middle Ages, the place belonged to different rulers and bought itself free in 1538.

In 1903 Castrisch was connected to the Rhaetian Railway . In 2014 it joined the newly formed community of Ilanz / Glion .
