Geography, transport, economy

The terrace village is located in the Rhaeto-Romanic language area of the Surselva on a climatically favorable sunny slope of the Vorderrhein Valley .

Until the end of 1980 Andiast was a small farming village with no trade or industry, tourism brought a certain boom. Today Andiast is a small winter sports resort with good connections to the skiing and hiking area of Breil / Brigels and Waltensburg / Vuorz . Because of its exposed hillside location, most of the houses in the village center were built along the main road. At the end of the village, a narrow, paved hiking and driveway leads to the dam and the neighboring village of Panix . A traffic connection with postbus traffic is only guaranteed via the serpentine road from Waltensburg station over the high plateau of Waltensburg.

history

Andiast (above), below Waltensburg

An archaeological grave find on the Andiast Maiensässen from 1962 proved that the mountain area around Andiast was already inhabited in the younger Iron Age . The first documentary mention of a settlement was made in 765 in the will of Bishop Tello . Among other things, a court (curtis) with the three interest earners Maurelius, Dominicus and Donatus is listed. Mining and the exploitation of minerals played a certain role in the municipality of Andiast and in the neighboring Rueun.

On September 8, 1526 Andiast was separated from the reformed parish of Waltensburg and raised to an independent parish. The community remained Catholic from then on. However, together with Waltensburg, Pigniu and Rueun, Andiast continued to form a joint Bündner judicial community .

On October 8th and 9th, 1799, the village got caught up in the turmoil of European warfare when the Russian Field Marshal Suworow and parts of his starved army were pushed over the 2400 m high Panixer Pass in storms and snow, avoiding the pressure of the French . They also penetrated Andiast and looted the village, but were pushed down the Rhine.

Because the rural agrarian structures did not allow population growth, there was a wave of emigration in the 19th century and earlier. Improved traffic structures now enable the population to connect to the peripheral center of Ilanz. The majority of the village population lives from gentle tourism and agriculture and forestry.

In 2018, the previously independent communities of Andiast and Waltensburg / Vuorz merged with the community of Breil / Brigels .

The community, first mentioned in 765 as Andeste , officially changed its name from Andest to Andiast in 1943 , which corresponds to the current Romance pronunciation at the place. The origin of the name is unclear. The * -est suffix, which is widespread in Graubünden , undisputedly belongs to a pre-Roman or pre-Celtic language class, which, however, cannot be determined in more detail.
