The clustered village of Tersnaus lies at an altitude of 1063 m. ü. About 600 meters from the main road Ilanz – Vals in the Lower Lugnezertal at the foothills of the Calasagrates. The houses are arranged like a chessboard. The village received this special structure during the reconstruction after a devastating fire in the village, to which practically all buildings fell victim. The emergency situation after the fire caused many residents to leave the village. As a result, the citizens of the community emigrated, but there was a repopulation. As an alpine farming village with structural problems and pressure to migrate, Tersnaus recorded a demographic development similar to that of the villages and neighborhoods in the rest of the Val Lumnezia . From 129 inhabitants in 1950 the number of inhabitants decreased to 62 in 1980, only to increase briefly to 87 in 1996. In 2000 the number dropped to around 70. An improvement in the livelihood of the local population brought about the overall agrarian improvement in Tersnaus, which was completed in 1999 after 15 years of construction. In parallel to the overall improvement, the municipality was then able to expand the remaining infrastructure. Thanks to state contributions from the Canton of Graubünden through financial equalization and significant sponsorship contributions, it was possible to prevent this financially weak and poorly productive neighborhood from becoming overindebted. By means of an incorporation contract, four structurally weak neighborhoods were merged into the new community of Suraua on August 31, 2001 by the Grisons Great Council . The aim was to strengthen the structures and economic development, which was only partially successful. Today Tersnaus is a neighborhood of the merged Lugnezer municipality Lumnezia .

history

The name Tersnaus is first mentioned in 1362 as Terzenaus . As a fiefdom of the Diocese of Chur, Tersnaus was under the rule of the Lords of Tersnaus and Valendas from 1368, and under the Sax-Misox in the 15th century . The Lords of Tersnaus owned estates in St. Martin and Valendas . Together with Camuns and Surcasti , Tersnaus broke away from the parish church of St. Vinzenz in Vella in 1528 . On June 9, 1528, these three villages joined together to form a common parish. On June 14, 1669, Tersnaus founded their own parish together with St. Martin. The current parish church in its current form dates from 1672.

From 1395 the Walsers began to immigrate from neighboring Vals to the climatically more favorable regions; some also settled in Tersnaus. In order to prevent foreign infiltration, the people of Tersnaus issued a ban in 1547, which made it impossible for the Valsers to buy land in the village, known as the Lugnez marriage ban. At that time, the Count of Sax-Misox forbade marriage between Romansh-speaking locals and immigrant Walsers. a. was based on fiefdom and was hardly linguistic. The church bell of St. Theodul from 1395 reminds of the times of the Walser in Tersnaus, along with the family name of German origin - St. Theodul is the patron saint of the Valser.

On July 18, 1900, a major fire broke out, which killed almost the entire village; only a house, the church and a stable were saved. The village was rebuilt and an access road to the main traffic axis in the valley was created, which promoted commuter traffic to Vella, Vals and Ilanz. The hillside location in the area of a rubble fan had a disadvantageous effect, so that the village brook damaged the village several times through ruffles and made it necessary to improve the infrastructure again.

Some technical and structural infrastructures brought relief to the alpine villagers. In 1918 the first telephone line to the village was built, in 1940 the water supply was rehabilitated and in 1960 the sewer system was built. From 1973, however, Tersnaus no longer had its own school; the schoolchildren are schooled by bus in the neighboring towns. Since 2017 there has been a hiking trail connection through the adjacent Tobel Val da Tersnaus by means of a rope bridge to Camuns . The quiet residential area and the Maiensäss and forest area with the protective forest above the village are attractive for tourism.

A lack of infrastructure led to emigration: in 1950 the village still had 129 inhabitants, in 2000 it was 70. At that time, 74% of the population were Romansh as their mother tongue.
