The Catholic parish church of Tersnaus in the Val Lumnezia in the Swiss canton of Graubünden is dedicated to Apollinaris of Ravenna and Maria Magdalena .

Parish history

The parish church of St. Appolonius and Sta. Maria Magdalena is mentioned in a document in 1345 as S. Bellonis in Terznaus , which corresponds to the Latin spelling for the Rhaeto-Romanic Sogn Balaun (St. Apollinaris). On January 31, 1469, the church received an indulgence. Around 1478 a new consecration seems to have taken place and the patronage is now St. Apollinaris and Maria Magdalena.

Together with Camuns and Surcasti , Tersnaus broke away from the parish church of St. Vinzenz in Vella in 1528 . On June 9, 1528, these three villages joined together to form a common parish. On June 14, 1669, Tersnaus founded their own parish together with St. Martin. On June 30, 1672 the church was consecrated after a new building.

The northeast-facing complex consists of a three-bay baroque nave without chapels and a choir closed on three sides, which is covered with a combination of semi-dome and cross vault. The tower with the bells stands on the north-west side of the choir, with the outer wall of the tower running in the extension of the nave. The lower four floors date from the Romanesque period, the two bell floors with the dome-shaped hood were added to the new building in 1672.

The three wooden altars were built around 1670 when the new building was being built, the polygonal, richly carved pulpit dates from 1678. The figure of Christ with the depiction of the donor above the late Gothic sacraments niche around 1478 was made by Hans Jakob Greuter. Hans Ardüser painted the depictions of Saints Philip and Bartholomew at the end of the 16th century.
