geography

The Val Lumnezia, the largest side valley of the Surselva , has a total area of 382 km². The valley is traversed by the Glenner , which rises on the northeast flank of Piz Scharboda and flows into the Vorderrhein at Ilanz . In the middle of the valley, the Valser Tal branches off at Uors , which, however, geographically speaking, is a side valley of the main Lugnezer valley axis. The inner-alpine climate is characterized by drought and lots of sunshine, high-alpine on the steps above the tree line.

Languages and denominations

The main language is the Rhaeto-Romanic idiom Sursilvan , which is endangered due to Germanization and migration, but at least forms a strong territorial unit in comparison to other Rhaeto-Romanic language areas. In Vals valley is Walser German spoken. With the exception of the Reformed villages Duvin , Pitasch , Riein and Luven, the Lugnez is mainly Catholic.

Patronage

The patron saint of the valley is Saint Mauritius . A chapel was built for him in Cumbel in 1716, which was the target of an annual procession until the end of the 19th century.

Political structure

In the Val Lumnezia are the villages of Vrin , Lumbrein , Degen (consisting of the Degen, Rumein and Vattiz fractions), Vignogn , Vella , Cumbel , Morissen , Suraua (consisting of the Camuns , Uors-Peiden , Tersnaus , Surcasti ), Duvin , St. Martin and Vals . The political center is Vella. On January 1, 2013, the individual municipalities merged with the exception of Vals to form the new municipality of Lumnezia .

Until December 31, 2015, Surcuolm belonged politically to the Lumnezia district , but is not in the valley, but on the other side of the Piz Mundaun and is now part of Obersaxen. Conversely, Riein and Pitasch are geographically part of the Val Lumnezia, but politically the latter both joined the regional center Ilanz / Glion in the Surselva region from 2016 .
