Vella Catholic Church

The Catholic Church in Vella Sogn Roc in Val Lumnezia in the Swiss canton of Graubünden was built in the years from 1587.

history

According to an inscription on the northwest wall, it was donated by the patrician Gallus de Mont zu Löwenberg on the basis of a vow during a plague wave. It is consecrated to Our Lady and the plague saints Rochus and Sebastian .

It was consecrated on August 16, 1592 by Bishop Petrus Raschèr. The tower dates from 1643. In 1939 the church was lengthened by 3.25 meters. After the expansion of the cantonal road, the sacristy was moved to the end of the choir in 1887, in 1972 it came to stand on the northeast wall and was connected to the tower. Renovations took place in 1930 (altar), 1939/1940, 1987 (outside) and 1991 (inside).

construction

The church building is a building facing south-west with a retracted choir and gable roof. The paintings on the front are from 1940 and by Alois Carigiet , while the pictures on the long side, which were supplemented and restored by Giacomo Zanolari in 1940, are by Hans Ardüser . The open bell chamber of the tower is timbered and has an octagonal pointed helmet. In 1987 the old tower clock was rediscovered and restored.

The choir is covered with a false ribbed vault made of stucco. The wooden ceiling was rebuilt in 1991 taking the late Gothic ceiling into account. The winged altar was painted in 1601 on behalf of Governor Gallus de Mont by Hans Ardüser, who originally painted the entire nave. Remnants of an Annunciation scene can be found on the wall of the choir arch. The altar of the church in Vella is the only existing altar in Ardüser.

Originally the church had two small bells from 1587. The larger one now hangs in the St. Carlo Borromeo chapel above Morissen , the smaller one has a crack and hangs in the old rectory in Pleif. The three current bells date from 1643 and 1641.
