After the first years of childhood on a farm in Trun, the family moved to Chur in 1911 , where he attended secondary school and canton school, which Carigiet dropped out in 1918. He completed an apprenticeship as a decorative painter and went to Zurich in 1923 , where he worked in Max Dalang's (1882–1965) advertising studio. In 1927 he opened his own studio, in which he designed sets and costumes for a cabaret. In 1933 he was co-founder of the Cabaret Cornichon . Alois Carigiet did a large number of commercial graphic works from this period, such as the red clover leaf of the national lottery from 1937 and the poster for the Swiss National Exhibition in Zurich in 1939 , after a first poster competition, which Carigiet also won, was unsatisfactory.

In 1938, as a work not intended for the public at the time, a wine cellar painting of the former Fraumünsterkeller restaurant in Zurich's Metropol was created. In 1939, when he was dissatisfied with the situation of having to do commissioned work as an illustrator, he switched from graphic designer to freelance artist and returned to Graubünden when he moved to Platenga in Obersaxen . In 1942 he married and the couple had two children. There he also worked on the illustration of children's books. The best known was the Schellenursli , which was written by Selina Chönz and with which the Engadin custom Chalandamarz became world famous. The following children's books such as Flurina and the Wild Bird did not quite achieve this level of awareness, but are no less valuable from an artistic point of view.

Exhibitions in Schaffhausen , Solothurn and Geneva followed . In 1950 he temporarily moved back to Zurich to create the mural Allegro con Spirito in the Muraltengut , which the city bought in 1944 for representation purposes . In 1956 he painted the facade of the house "Schwarzer Adler" in Stein am Rhein on behalf of the Falken brewery (Schaffhausen) . In 1960 he returned to his home in Graubünden in Trun and continued to devote himself to the illustration of books. He also wrote children's books himself.

A room in the Sursilvan Museum in Trun is dedicated to the work of Alois Carigiet . Alois Carigiet was the older brother of the future actor Zarli Carigiet .
