Gaudenz Meili
Gaudenz Meili (born July 22, 1937 in Chur ) is a Swiss film director, producer and screenwriter.
Life
Born in Chur (Canton of Graubünden ) in 1937 , Gaudenz Meili grew up in Trogen (Canton of Appenzell AR ) and attended the canton school there. After graduating with a commercial diploma, he moved to Zurich , where he began studying art at the University of Zurich , which he supplemented with acting lessons and a traineeship as an assistant director to Oskar Wolderlin at the Schauspielhaus Zurich .
After the death of his mentor, he switched from theater to the film industry in 1961 and made cultural reports and extensive documentaries on Swiss personalities such as Henry Dunant , Karl Stauffer-Bern , Gottlieb Duttweiler , Alois Carigiet and Alex Sadkowsky for Swiss television (DRS) .
As a young talent at ZDF , Meili got the opportunity in 1972 to direct the film Der Kopflose Falke based on Truman Capote's novella The Headless Falk for “ Das kleine Fernsehspiel ” with recordings in New York and in Studio Hamburg , after having previously worked for the same station We Geometer ... , the documentary about the works of art by the mentally ill, had created.
By winning the SF-DRS competition "Filming epic Swiss literature", Gaudenz Meili was able to produce the feature film Der Stumme based on the novel by Otto F. Walter in 1976 . The film, with international cast by Hanna Schygulla and Wolf Kaiser , received more attention in Europe than in Switzerland. Gaudenz Meili was invited as a guest director to television in the former GDR ( Deutscher Fernsehfunk ), where he staged the television film Die arge Legende vom Zanzenen Galgenstrick based on the novel of the same name by Franz Werfel in 1977 .
As a result, Meili distanced himself more and more from the Swiss film scene of the 1970s and 1980s, which focused on social criticism, and from the mid-1980s turned more towards the art film genre, in which he worked through artists such as Giovanni Segantini , Markus Raetz , Johann Heinrich Füssli and the Swiss curator Harald Szeemann shot and produced internationally shown art films. A synthesis of image and music was always important to him. Similar to his role model Stanley Kubrick , he tried to give the picture a dramatic effect by using adequate and carefully selected music.
Winning the 1989 Grand Prix for Der Neapelfries ( Markus Raetz ) at the world's most important art film festival , the Festival international du film sur l'Art (FIFA) in Montréal , Canada , was the highlight of Meili's art filmography.
Gaudenz Meili was married to Regina Meili-Egli (1937–2012), is the father of three sons and now lives in Tuscany, where he is dedicated to the production of olive oil and wine.
