Guy Simon (born April 21, 1933 in Lampaul-Plouarzel , Département Finistère , † December 11, 1988 in Brest ) was a French football player and later coach .

Career

Early career and time as a professional (until 1958)

The defender Simon grew up in the west of the Brittany region and began playing football during his school days in the city of Brest and after some time joined the youth team of the local amateur club AS Brest . As a young adult, he made the leap into the first team and, thanks to his talent, was also appointed to regional selection teams. From 1954 he had to do his military service in the Breton capital of Rennes, further east , where he joined the football team of his regiment. In this way he earned the attention of several professional clubs, including that of the first division club Stade Rennes , where he was taken under contract for the season 1956/57.

On August 19, 1956, Simon made his debut in a 2-0 defeat by Racing Strasbourg in the top French league. Then he took a regular place on the right side of the defense. His teammates on the defensive included Jacques Poulain and Yves Boutet . He played for the previously promoted Bretons 20 first division games, but had to witness the direct relegation at the end of the 1956/57 season. Rennes had only finished third from last and failed in the following relegation round against the third division OSC Lille .

Although he had played regularly at Rennes, he was not held there and in 1957 moved to the second division SO Montpellier in the south of the country. For Montpellier he was in 28 second division matches in the season 1957/58, but was then thrown back by a serious ankle injury. This forced him to end his professional career in 1958 after only two years, after which he returned to his former club AS Brest.

Further work in amateur football (1958–1988)

With AS Brest he competed in top amateur football from 1958 to 1963 and moved from there to Gas de Saint-Thivisiau from Landivisiau , where he carried out a double function as player coach until 1967 . In 1976 he returned again to AS Brest, where he worked as a youth coach from then on. He held this post until he died in December 1988 at the age of 55.
