Jacques Poulain (born August 6, 1932 in Clermont-Ferrand , † November 22, 2017 in Vitré ) is a former French football player .

Career

The 178 centimeter tall defender Poulain was born in Auvergne , but grew up in the Brittany city of Saint-Malo , where he started playing football for the US Saint-Malo . After graduating from school, he went to Rennes to begin studying dentistry and in 1952 he was accepted into the squad of the first division club Stade Rennes UC . For this he came on November 2, 1952 at the age of 20 in a 2-2 draw against SO Montpellier for his debut in the top French division. He was then regularly called up and in 1953 had to accept the descent of his team to the second division. In the second division he became one of the team's top performers and managed to return to the elite class with his teammate in 1956.

In 1957 Poulain experienced direct relegation with Rennes, but remained loyal to the club and was rewarded in 1958 with renewed promotion. During the 1959/60 season he lost his regular place and in the following season he was only on the field at a league match. That was because he was no longer able to cope with the competition that consisted of Henri Gouès and Yves Boutet . In view of this, he decided in 1961 to end his professional career at the age of 28 after 90 first division games with four goals and 135 second division games with one goal. Then he let his career end at the amateur club Stade Saint-Brieuc . After the end of his time as a footballer, he worked as a dentist in Vitré , as which he had already worked during the last phase of his professional time.
