Martin Derungs (born May 12, 1943 in Chur, GR , Canton of Graubünden) is a Swiss musician and composer .

Live and act

Derungs received his first music lessons from his father and from the Chur cantor Lucius Juon. From 1962 he studied organ with Luigi Favini, piano with Hans Andreae and composition with Paul Müller at the Zurich University of Music . In 1967 Derungs obtained the soloist diploma for organ at the Basel Music Academy with Eduard Müller. Further composition studies followed from 1967 to 1971 with Günter Bialas in Munich. From 1971 to 1974 Derungs worked as an editor for the shortwave broadcaster “Deutsche Welle” in Cologne. 1980 to 1984 he had a teaching position for harpsichord , figured bass and chamber music at the State University of Music in Karlsruhe. Since then he has lived in Zurich as a freelance composer and harpsichordist. From 1978 to 1987 Derungs worked as a program designer for the Zurich Oberland Music College, from 1979 to 1984 as President of the Musicians' Cooperative Switzerland and from 1980 to 1989 as a member of the foundation board of the Künstlerhaus Boswil . In 1987 he was awarded a year of work by the city of Zurich, and from 1993 to 1996 he presided over the Swiss Tonkünstlerverein . Influenced by the avant-garde currents of the time, Derungs composed mainly instrumental works from the end of the sixties, with the recorder playing a special role as a frequently used instrument to this day. From the mid-seventies onwards, he increasingly composed compositions in connection with literary texts, and since 1986 also in the form of stage works. Derungs calls another group of works that have been created since the mid-1990s and refer to historical music in a variety of ways, «Music about music».
