Silja Walter
Silja Walter , religious name : Sr. M. Hedwig OSB (* Cécile Walter on April 23, 1919 in Rickenbach near Olten ; † January 31, 2011 in Fahr Monastery ) was a Swiss Benedictine woman and writer .
Life
Silja Walter was the second of eight daughters of the publisher, writer and national councilor Otto Walter . The only brother was the writer Otto F. Walter . From 1933 to 1938 she attended the Bernarda teacher training college in Menzingen . The subsequent study of literature at the University of Freiburg , later at the University of Basel , she had to break off for health reasons. In 1944 she published her first poems.
In 1948 she entered the Fahr Monastery. On October 11, 1949, she made her first vows and received the religious name Sister Maria Hedwig . Silja Walter published over 60 works. In addition to numerous lyrical works, she also wrote mystery plays and plays. A complete edition of her writings and her autobiography Das dreifarbene Meer has been published by Paulusverlag . She died at the age of 91 in Fahr Monastery. Part of her estate is in the Swiss Literary Archives in Bern .
Awards
Silja Walter's work has won several prizes, such as the Literature Prize and Culture Prize of the City of Zurich, twice (1956 and 1992) the Complete Works Prize of the Swiss Schiller Foundation and the Art Prize of the Canton of Solothurn . She was an honorary citizen of Rickenbach, Würenlos and Mümliswil-Ramiswil .
