A great city arises

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A large city arises is a three-verse, Catholic hymn , which was composed in 1965 by the Benedictine Silja Walter (1919–2011) and set to music in 1972 by Josef Anton Saladin (1908–1996). In the praise of God it is under the song number 479 (in the old praise of God from 1975 it was the song number 642), in the Catholic hymn book of German-speaking Switzerland it has the song number 505.

content

The three stanzas successively express praise, pleading and thanks. They refer to the 21st chapter of the Revelation of John with the headings “God's dwelling among men” and “The new Jerusalem” as well as to the Mother Church .

The first stanza describes metaphorically the heavenly city that Jesus Christ will establish for the people. It is a stanza that expresses praise for the Savior.

The second stanza expresses the requests of the Christian community to be accepted into this city.

In the third stanza, thank you for God the Father and his Son Jesus Christ is formulated.

text

All three stanzas of the song are structured with the rhyme sequence AABCCB.

Some text changes exist, such as:

  • By changing the order of the word : "Let us in through your gate" instead of "Let us in through your gate".
  • Through gendering : “God means each of us child” or “God means daughter, son and child” instead of “God means every son and child”.
  • By substitution : "A great city ent is" or "A new city rises" (motto of the 91. German Catholic Conference ) instead of "A great city rises".
