Josef Anton Saladin

Josef Anton Saladin (born June 13, 1908 in Dornach , Canton Solothurn , † September 16, 1996 in Solothurn ) was a Swiss Roman Catholic priest, church musician and university teacher.

Life

He attended the St. Fidelis College in Stans , where Johann Baptist Hilber influenced him musically. After studying theology in Lucerne and Rome , he was ordained a priest in 1933 . After years of chaplaincy in Grenchen and Solothurn, he studied church music at the Pontifical Institute for Church Music in Rome and in Zurich , where he received his doctorate in 1945 with a thesis on music maintenance at the Lucerne St. Leodegar Foundation . At the same time he was a music teacher and organist in Zug , from 1946 choirmaster, catechist and organist at the Franciscan Church in Lucerne . At the church music school there he taught music history as a professor.

From 1957 to 1965 Saladin was pastor in Schaffhausen . In 1968 the Swiss Bishops' Conference appointed him Commissioner for Church Music. He was chairman of the commission for the Catholic standard hymnbook of German-speaking Switzerland, the forerunner of the current KGS .

From 1972 to 1984 he was General President of the General Cecilia Association for Germany . Pope Paul VI appointed him papal honorary prelate . In 1973 he received the Orlando di Lasso Medal .

Saladin composed several masses and Latin church chants. It was from him that the melody of the song A large city arises , which is contained in all German-language Catholic hymn books.

His grave is in the St. Nicklas cemetery in Solothurn.
