Pontifical Institute for Church Music
The Pontifical Institute for Church Music ( Latin : Pontificium Institutum Musicae Sacrae , Italian : Pontificio Istituto di Musica Sacra , PIMS ) in Rome is a papal educational institution for church music .
history
Today's Pontifical Institute for Church Music emerged from the College of Church Music (Italian: Scuola Superiore di Musica Sacra) and was founded by Pope Pius X (1903-1914). It was opened on January 3, 1911 and confirmed with the papal breve "Expleverunt desiderii" of November 4, 1911. The educational institution moved to its first location in Rome on Via del Mascherone. This was followed by the elevation to a papal institution and permission to award academic degrees . Pope Benedict XV (1914–1922) made it possible to move into the new building, the Palazzo di Sant'Apollinare, on October 16, 1914. The statutes were on November 22, 1922 with the motu proprio "As musicae sacrae restituionem" by Pope Pius XI. (1922–1939) approved.
The Pontifical Institute for Church Music
With the Apostolic Constitution "Deus scientiarum Domini" of May 24, 1931, the school received its final name "Pontificio Instituto di Musica Sacra" and was incorporated into the series of papal universities and faculties . From 1953 to 1983 the music institute developed into a trend-setting chair for church music. Different musical disciplines and new departments were founded, which extended to the establishment of a school for Gregorian semiology .
In 1983 there was another move to the Abbey of San Girolamo in Urbe (Rome), which was transferred by Pope John Paul II . With the approval of the Holy See , the Institute may award bachelor , licentiate , doctorate and master degrees.
Teaching objectives
The statute names the overarching learning objectives and stipulates that “church music disciplines are taught at the institute. Knowledge of the patrimony of church music and artistic forms of expression are promoted. The courses also include research and analysis . The institute would like to make known the repertory of yesterday and today with publications and presentations ”. Regarding further goals, it says: “The“ Pontificio Instituto di Musica Sacra ”supports the founding and promotion of institutions that deal with the study of church music, be it on an academic level (universities and colleges) as well as from a pastoral point of view (diocesan Church music schools). It also organizes study conferences and master classes. ”The Congregation for Catholic Education is the governing and supervising dicastery . Your Cardinal Prefect (currently Zenon Grocholewski ) is the Grand Chancellor of the Pontifical Institute for Church Music.
