Lorenzo Cardinal Baldisseri (born September 29, 1940 in Barga , Province of Lucca , Italy ) is a Cardinal Curia of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Lorenzo Baldisseri received on 29 June 1963 by the Archbishop of Pisa , Ugo Camozzo , the sacrament of Holy Orders . He was a student at the Pontifical Institute for Church Music and later changed subjects. He received his doctorate in Canon Law from the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome .

On December 3, 1973, Lorenzo Baldisseri entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See . He was assistant secretary in the Apostolic Nunciatures in El Salvador and Guatemala . In 1974 Baldisseri became secretary of the nunciature. On December 13, 1974, Pope Paul VI awarded him . the honorary title of chaplain to His Holiness ( Monsignor ). In 1977 Lorenzo Baldisseri became secretary of the nunciature in Japan . In 1980 he became Uditore in the Apostolic Nunciature in Brazil . Baldisseri moved to the Apostolic Nunciature in Paraguay in 1981 . In 1983 he was transferred to France . Baldisseri became a Nunciature Councilor in Zimbabwe in 1986 . On May 27, 1987, Pope John Paul II awarded him the title of Honorary Prelate of His Holiness .

On January 15, 1992, John Paul II appointed him Titular Archbishop of Diocletiana and Apostolic Nuncio in Haiti . He was ordained bishop on March 7th of the same year by Cardinal Secretary of State Angelo Cardinal Sodano ; Co- consecrators were the secretary of the Congregation for Bishops , Archbishop Justin Francis Rigali , and the Archbishop of Pisa, Alessandro Plotti . Lorenzo Baldisseri chose the motto Itinere læte servire Domino . On April 6, 1995, Baldisseri became Apostolic Nuncio in Paraguay. John Paul II appointed him on June 19, 1999 as Apostolic Nuncio in India . Lorenzo Baldisseri also became Apostolic Nuncio in Nepal on June 23, 1999 . On November 12, 2002, John Paul II appointed him Apostolic Nuncio in Brazil.

Pope Benedict XVI appointed him secretary of the Congregation for Bishops on January 11, 2012.

On September 21, 2013, Pope Francis appointed him General Secretary of the Synod of Bishops .

In the consistory of February 22, 2014, Pope Francis accepted him as a cardinal deacon with the titled deaconry Sant'Anselmo all'Aventino in the college of cardinals .
