Christophe Pierre
Christophe Pierre (born January 30, 1946 in Rennes ) is a French clergyman, archbishop and diplomat of the Holy See .
Life
Christophe Pierre spent much of his childhood in Africa, including Madagascar and Malawi . He enrolled in the Rennes seminary in 1963 and interrupted his studies from 1965 to 1966 to do his military service. The Archbishop of Rennes , Cardinal Gouyon , finally ordained him a priest on April 5, 1970 . Until 1977 he studied at the Pontifical Diplomatic Academy in Rome. He then worked in various nunciatures worldwide before moving to the permanent representation of the Holy See to the United Nations in 1991 .
Pope John Paul II appointed him on July 12, 1995 titular archbishop pro hac vice of Gunela and apostolic nuncio in Haiti . He was ordained bishop by Cardinal Secretary of State Angelo Sodano on September 24 of the same year; Co- consecrators were Paul Joseph Marie Cardinal Gouyon, Senior Archbishop of Rennes, and Jacques André Marie Jullien , Archbishop of Rennes.
On May 10, 1999, he was appointed Apostolic Nuncio in Uganda . The assassination of the nuncio Michael Courtney in Burundi on December 29, 2003 also took place at this time . Pierre then stayed there for diplomatic purposes and conducted the funeral mass. Pope Benedict XVI appointed him on March 22, 2007 as Apostolic Nuncio in Mexico . In Mexico, the conflict between Central American immigrants and the United States also shaped his term of office, which was one of the decisive factors for his later appointment as apostolic nuncio in the USA. On April 12, 2016, Pope Francis appointed him Apostolic Nuncio to the United States .
Christophe Pierre is fluent in English and Spanish.
