Paul Gouyon
Paul-Joseph-Marie Cardinal Gouyon (born October 24, 1910 in Bordeaux , Gironde , Aquitaine , † September 26, 2000 there ) was a French cardinal of the Roman Church and Archbishop of Rennes .
Life
He studied at Bordeaux University and Seminar Bordeaux. He attended the Saint-Sulpice seminary in Paris , the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome and the Institut Catholique de Paris . He was ordained a priest on March 13, 1937 and completed his studies in 1939. After serving in the French army from 1939 to 1940 during the Second World War, he began his pastoral work in Bordeaux, first as pastor of Montussan and Beychac (1940–1944), as chaplain of the Lycée Michel-Montaigne (1944–1951), and Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Bordeaux. On April 6, 1955, he was made an Honorary Prelate to His Holiness .
Pope Pius XII appointed him on August 6, 1957 Bishop of Bayonne . The archbishop of Bordeaux , Paul-Marie-André Richaud , gave him on 7 October of the same year in the Cathedral of St. André , the episcopal ordination ; Co - consecrators were Joseph-Marie-Eugène Martin , Archbishop of Rouen , and Louis-Jean Guyot , Bishop of Coutances . He attended all the sessions of the Second Vatican Council . Pope Paul VI appointed him on August 6, 1963 coadjutor archbishop of Rennes and titular archbishop of Pessinus . After the death of Cardinal Clément-Émile Roques , he followed this on September 4, 1964 as Archbishop of Rennes.
Paul VI took him on April 28, 1969 as a cardinal priest with the titular Church Natività di Nostro Signore Gesù Cristo a Via Gallia in the College of Cardinals . He participated in the conclaves in August and October 1978. He also became the national president of Pax Christi . On October 15, 1985, John Paul II accepted his resignation due to exceeding the age limit.
Cardinal Gouyon died ten years later, less than a month before his 90th birthday. He was buried in the cemetery of the motherhouse of the Congregation of the Little Sisters of the Poor in Saint-Pern.
