The Roman Catholic Church in Nepal is a minority church .

Originally belonging to the Archdiocese of Patna ( India ), the 147,181 km² area was raised to an independent mission sui juris on October 7, 1983 .

In the following years the mission developed rapidly, so that in 1988 it had 2,174 believers, in 2001 it had already grown to 6,195. The establishment of an internal structure was also successful, and the number of parishes rose from 13 to 35 at the same time.

On November 8, 1996, the mission was elevated to an Apostolic Prefecture under the direction of the Jesuits. They managed to train a local clergy, which in 2001 already had 6 priests . At the same time there were 40 religious priests and 104 religious sisters in the prefecture, mainly from abroad.

Pope Benedict XVI elevated the Apostolic Prefecture to the Apostolic Vicariate of Nepal on February 10, 2007 and appointed the previous Prefect Anthony Sharma SJ as Bishop. The seat of the Vicar Apostolic is in Kathmandu .

Archbishop Giambattista Diquattro has been representing the Holy See diplomatically as Apostolic Nuncio in India and Nepal since January 2017 .
