The Archdiocese of Patna ( Latin Archidioecesis Patnensis ) is an archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church in India with its seat in Patna .
The Archdiocese of Patna includes the districts of Aurangabad , Gaya , Jehanabad , Nalanda , Nawada , Patna and parts of the Munger district in Bihar state .
history
The diocese of Patna was founded on February 7, 1845 by Pope Gregory XVI. Established from the cession of territory by the Apostolic Vicariate Tibet-Hindustan as Apostolic Vicariate Patna . On August 1, 1886, the Apostolic Vicariate of Patna was dissolved and the territory was ceded to the diocese of Allahabad .
On September 10, 1919, the former Apostolic Vicariate of Patna was re-established as the Diocese of Patna . The diocese of Patna was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Ranchi as a suffragan . On August 3, 1956, the Diocese of Patna gave up parts of its territory to establish the Apostolic Prefecture of Bhagalpur . Further territorial assignments took place on March 6, 1980 to establish the diocese of Muzaffarpur and on October 7, 1983 to establish the Mission sui juris Nepal . On March 16, 1999, the diocese of Patna was raised to an archbishopric by Pope John Paul II with the papal bull Indicos intra fines fidelium . On December 12, 2005, the Archdiocese of Patna gave up parts of its territory to establish the Diocese of Buxar .
