The Archdiocese of Calcutta ( Latin Archidioecesis Calcuttensis ) is an archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church in India with its seat in Kolkata .
The Archdiocese of Calcutta includes the districts of Bankura , Haora , Hugli , Calcutta, Pashchim Medinipur , Purba Medinipur and Uttar 24 Pargana in the state of West Bengal .
history
The Archdiocese of Calcutta was founded on April 18, 1834 by Pope Gregory XVI. Established with the Apostolic Constitution Latissimi Terrarum from cessions of territory from the diocese of São Tomé by Meliapore as the Apostolic Vicariate of Bengal . On February 15, 1850 the Apostolic Vicariate of Bengal gave up parts of its territory to establish the Apostolic Vicariate of East Bengal . The remainder was renamed the Vicariate Apostolic West Bengal . The Apostolic Vicariate West Bengal gave up parts of its territory in 1870 to establish the Apostolic Prefecture of Central Bengal .
On September 1, 1886, the Vicariate Apostolic West Bengal was by Pope Leo XIII. raised to the archbishopric with the Apostolic Constitution Humanae salutis and renamed the Archdiocese of Calcutta . The Archdiocese of Calcutta gave up on May 25, 1927 parts of its territory to establish the Diocese of Ranchi . Further assignments were made on February 15, 1929 to found the Mission sui juris Sikkim, on June 14, 1951 to found the Sambalpur diocese , on January 17, 1952 to found the Apostolic Prefecture of Malda , and on July 2, 1962 to found the Jamshedpur diocese , on June 8, 1968 for the establishment of the Apostolic Prefecture of Balasore , on May 30, 1977 for the establishment of the Baruipur diocese and on October 24, 1997 for the establishment of the Asansol diocese .
