history
The forerunner of today's Archdiocese of Madras-Mylapore is the Apostolic Vicariate Fort St. George , founded in 1642 from the Diocese of São Tomé by Meliapore . In 1832 it was renamed the Apostolic Vicariate Madras. On February 17, 1845 the Apostolic Vicariate gave up parts of its territory to establish the Apostolic Vicariates Hyderabad and Vizagapatam . The promotion to archbishopric took place on September 1, 1886. In 1928 the Archdiocese gave up parts of its territory to establish the Mission sui juris Bellary and the Diocese of Nellore . The archdiocese of Madras-Mylapore was established on November 13, 1952 through the union of the archdiocese of Madras with the diocese of São Tomé of Meliapore (established on January 9, 1606); at the same time areas were given up to establish the dioceses of Vellore and Tanjore . On July 19, 2002, parts of the diocesan area were given to the newly created diocese of Chingleput .
