The Diocese of Tanjore ( lat. : Dioecesis Taniorensis ) is in India situated Roman Catholic diocese based in Tanjore .

history

Pope Pius XII founded it with the Apostolic Constitution Ex primaevae Ecclesiae on November 13, 1952 from cession of territory of the Archdiocese of Madras-Mylapore , to which it was subordinated as a suffragan .

On August 7, 1953, it became part of the ecclesiastical province of Pondicherry and Cuddalore .

The diocese of Tanjore includes the districts of Thanjavur (excluding the taluks of Papanasam and Kumbakonam), Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, and six taluks of the Pudukkottai district and two others in the Cuddalore district in Tamil Nadu state .

Place of pilgrimage

Velankanni , the largest Catholic pilgrimage site in Asia, with the basilica Our Lady of Good Health is located in the diocese .
