The Archdiocese of Visakhapatnam ( Latin Archidioecesis Visakhapatnamensis ) is an archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church in India with its seat in Visakhapatnam .
The territory includes the district East Godavari and Visakhapatnam as well as parts of the district Vizianagaram in the state of Andhra Pradesh .
history
The Pro-Vicariate Apostolic Vizagapatnam was established in 1845 from cessions of territory by the Apostolic Vicariate Madras . It was on April 3, 1850 by Pope Pius IX. raised as the Apostolic Vicariate Vizagapatam .
On September 1, 1886, the Vicariate Apostolic Vizagapatam by Pope Leo XIII. with the Apostolic Constitution Humanae salutis raised to the diocese and subordinated to the Archdiocese of Madras as a suffragan . The diocese of Vizagapatam gave up on July 11, 1887 parts of its territory to establish the diocese of Nagpur . Another assignment of territory took place on July 18, 1928 to establish the Mission sui juris Cuttack . On October 21, 1950, the diocese of Vizagapatam was renamed the Diocese of Visakhapatnam . The Diocese of Visakhapatnam gave up on July 1, 1993 parts of its territory to establish the Diocese of Srikakulam . On October 16, 2001, the Visakhapatnam diocese was raised to an archbishopric by Pope John Paul II .
