Lucas Sirkar

Lucas Sirkar SDB (born September 24, 1936 in Barisol ) is an Indian priest and retired Archbishop of Calcutta .

Life

Lucas Sirkar joined the Order of the Salesians of Don Bosco and was ordained a priest on April 20, 1968 . Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Krishnagar on June 22, 1984 .

The Archbishop of Shillong-Guwahati , Hubert D'Rosario SDB, ordained him on 22 September of the same year Bishop ; Co-consecrators were Linus Nirmal Gomes S.J. , Bishop of Baruipur , and Eric Benjamin , Bishop of Darjeeling .

On April 14, 2000, he was appointed Coadjutor Archbishop of Calcutta . After Henry Sebastian D'Souza's retirement , he succeeded him on April 2, 2002 as Archbishop of Calcutta. On February 23, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI. Lucas Sirkar's application for resignation due to reasons of age.
