Thomas D'Souza

Thomas D'Souza (born August 26, 1950 in Adyapady , Karnataka , India ) is Archbishop of Calcutta .

Life

Thomas D'Souza was an early part of the mission and from 1966 worked in the Diocese of Darjeeling at the foot of the Himalayas in West Bengal . He was ordained a priest on April 16, 1977 . After the death of Bishop Eric Benjamin in 1994, he was diocesan administrator of the Diocese of Darjeeling until 1997 .

Pope John Paul II appointed him on June 14, 1997 as the first bishop of the Diocese of Bagdogra , which was newly founded from the Diocese of Darjeeling . He was ordained bishop on January 25, 1998 by the Archbishop of Calcutta , Henry Sebastian D'Souza ; Co- consecrators were Telesphore Placidus Toppo , Archbishop of Ranchi , and Stephen Lepcha , Bishop of Darjeeling. He is a member of the Education Commission of the Indian Bishops' Conference of India.

On March 12, 2011 D'Souza was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI. the Archbishop of Calcutta, Lucas Sirkar SDB , as coadjutor archbishop . With Sirkar's age-related resignation on February 23, 2012, he succeeded him as Archbishop of Calcutta.
