The Palacio Real de Olite is a former royal palace in Olite , a town in the Spanish Comunidad Foral Navarra , which was originally started in the 13th century. The castle is a protected architectural monument .
history
Charles III , King of Navarre , enlarged the castle around 1400, creating the royal palace or castle , which subsequently became the seat of the kings of Navarre. As a result of the renovation, the building lost its former fortress-like character.
The now extensive complex consists essentially of the old castle ( Palacio Viejo ) from the 12th and 13th centuries and the new palace ( Palacio Nuevo ) from the 15th century. During the wars in the 16th century, the palace was damaged and eventually abandoned. In 1813 the building was set on fire during the Napoleonic Wars . Extensive restoration work began in the 20th century.
Todays use
Today, parts of the building are home to a Parador , a three-star hotel with a restaurant. Part of the facility can be visited.
