history
According to Isidore of Seville (560–636) ( Historia de regibus Gothorum, Vandalorum et Suevorum ), the Oligicus settlement was founded by the Visigoth king Suinthila (621–631). In fact, walls of a 1st century settlement were excavated on which Olite was later founded. In 1147 Olite received the first statute, the Fuero de los francos de Estella . In 1266 the city was allowed 15 market days per year. In the same year Olite became the meeting place of the Navarre Cortes . At the beginning of the 15th century the Gothic Palacio Real de Olite was built, the residence of King Charles III. of Navarre (1361-1425). With the end of Navarre's independence, the city's heyday also ended.
