Fitero is a small town and a municipality ( municipio ) with a total of 2,011 inhabitants (January 1, 2019) in the southwest of the autonomous community of Navarre in Spain .

Location and climate

The place Fitero is on the Río Alhama approx. 25 km (driving distance) west of the city of Tudela at an altitude of approx. 420  m . The climate is temperate to warm; Rain (approx. 480 mm / year) falls mainly in the winter half-year.

As a result of the mechanization of agriculture , the abandonment of small farms and the resulting lower demand for labor, the number of inhabitants in the municipality has declined significantly since the beginning of the 20th century ( rural exodus ).

economy

The basis of the life and survival of the residents of Fitero, who for centuries lived largely on their own , was and is agriculture, which of course also includes cattle breeding. Almost two thirds of the community area is forested and is used to a small extent for forestry . The wine-growing plays a minor role.

history

Cloister (claustro)

Celts or Celtiberians , Romans , Visigoths and even the Moors left hardly any traces on the area of ​​the municipality; The Romans and Moors, however, used the thermal springs located about 4 km to the west . The 11th century is characterized by the Christian reconquest ( reconquista ) and resettlement ( repoblación ) the area that until the Peace of Almazán equally from the (1375) Kingdom of Aragon and Castile was claimed. The Cistercians founded a monastery here around the middle of the 12th century . The place only came into being from 1482.

Attractions

• The most important attraction of the place is the monastery of Santa María La Real , built around the middle of the 12th century, with its Romanesque church, the early Gothic chapter house and the semi-modern library.
• The Castillo de Tudején , located above the village, was built on the site of a Celtiberian castrum . It existed until the 16th century, but today it has been destroyed except for a few remains.
• Nearby is the legendary cave of the Cueva de la Mora .
