Obanos is a place on the Spanish Way of St. James , Camino Francés , in the Spanish-speaking part of the autonomous community of Navarre .

Obanos is the historically documented Villa de los Infanzones - the town of the country lads . In 1327 they gathered the social forces of the Navarre kingdom and swore with them to jointly take action against the overwhelming power and abuse of office of the ruling French nobility. This project was under the motto Pro libertate patriae gens libera state - For a free fatherland you too must be free

The neo-Gothic parish church of the village was 1911 / 1912 built and John the Baptist ordained.

In 1993, on the village square in front of the church, the tradition of the Mystery Games was resumed, which the canon and writer Santos Bequiristain had initiated with his dramatization of the Mystery of Obanos : From 1962 (other sources say 1965) to 1978, professional and amateur actors played the every year in August History of Felicia of Aquitaine and her brother Guillermo (Wilhelm). Accordingly, on her way back from Santiago de Compostela , Felicia decides to renounce a planned marriage and court life and to lead a godly life in the mountains of Navarre. Her brother Wilhelm tried to bring her back to court and unintentionally kills her. As atonement for the sacrilege, the Pope sends him on a pilgrimage to Santiago. On his return he decided to practice asceticism and from then on served in the hermitage of Our Lady of Arnotegui. He dies after a pious and miraculous life and is venerated together with his sister as the patron saint of the area.

The tomb of Felicia is in the hermitage of Santa Maria at the exit of the village, the hermitage of Our Lady of Arnotegui is on a hill on the opposite side of the valley. The silver skull reliquary of Wilhelm is kept in the sacristy of the parish church. On the occasion of the village festival, wine is poured over it, which is then mixed with water and distributed to those present with a reputation for effecting miraculous healings.

It is possible that this legend is the subsequent creation of legends about the Christianization of local deities. Our Lady of Arnotegui is described as giving wine, her “predecessor” could have been an established pagan wine goddess.
