Pereje is a place on the Way of St. James in the west of the province of León in the autonomous community of Castile and León . It is located on the Valcarce River in the Sierra de Ancares .
history
The pilgrims' hostel in Pereje was the subject of a dispute during the 11th and 12th centuries. The opponents were the Cluniac monks of Santa María de Cruñego in Villafranca and the monks of the monastery of O Cebreiro , who belonged to the French abbey of Saint Girald d ' Aurillac . The latter had a church and a pilgrims' hospice built in Pereje, although the village belonged to the cluniac administrative district of Villafranca. The dispute escalated to such an extent that in addition to Pope Urban II, Queen Urraca and King Alphons IX. from León were involved.
Attractions
The village was partially able to retain its medieval appearance. Worth mentioning are the parish church of Santa María Magdalena, an old pilgrims' hospice and the former prison. The long tradition of the place with the St. James pilgrimage is continued today with a pilgrims' hostel.
Traditions
Every year on January 17th, the inhabitants of the village celebrate San Antonio Abad and Saint Magadalena.
