San Anton de Castrojeriz Monastery
The Convento de San Anton is a former monastery of the Antonite Order near Castrojeriz . The Antonite Order had made it its business to heal those who were sick from the Antonius fire.
It was founded in the 12th century by French monks. The now abandoned buildings were built in the 14th century .
You can still see the walls of the church and the previously roofed double pointed arch through which the Way of St. James and the road to Castrojeriz lead today as in the past . The Gothic style, which is clearly recognizable from the structural remains, results from the construction period . Examples of this are the pointed, trumpet-shaped former church portal with six archivolts , some of whose figures are very badly weathered. Opposite the portal there are two niches in which the monks provided food for pilgrims arriving late or in a hurry. The preserved church windows, whose tracery shows the Greek letter Tau - symbol of the order of the Antonites , also deserve attention .
The buildings are privately owned and have been closed to the public for a long time. Since around the beginning of the new millennium, there has been a simple pilgrim hostel there again in the summer, which is in a progressive improvement process that partially excludes the hostel operation.
