Atapuerca is a municipality and a town on the Camino de Santiago in Spain in the province of Burgos in the autonomous community of Castile and León .

In front of Atapuerca there is a landmark called fin del rey - King's End . This stone commemorates - like a stone tablet in Agés - the death of King García III. in 1054 . He died after his defeat against and at the hand of his brother Ferdinand I , King of Castile and León, in the context of disputes over common border areas. There is also the parish church of San Martín in the village.

Archaeological finds

Atapuercasign.JPG

Atapuerca became internationally known after hundreds of fossil bones were discovered there in several karst caves since 1994 , which could be assigned to the genus Homo and some of which are 800,000 years old. The Spanish excavation leaders defined the new species Homo antecessor on the basis of these hominine finds and at the same time identified them as direct ancestors of the Neanderthals . This distinction between the Spanish finds and similarly old African and European finds is, however, controversial; many other researchers assign the older finds to Homo erectus and the younger ones to Homo heidelbergensis . Atapuerca has been on the World Heritage List because of these sites since 2000 .
