The mechanization of agriculture , the abandonment of small farms and the resulting lower demand for labor have led to a significant decline in the number of inhabitants since the middle of the 20th century ( rural exodus ).
economy
The place was and is largely agricultural, with cattle breeding and dairy farming dominating; wheat and barley are grown in some fields in the area. Since the middle of the 20th century, tourism has been an important source of income for the municipality, which is generally regarded as a summer resort .
history
Little information is available from the Celtiberian , Roman , Visigothic and Moorish times. In the 10th century, Count Fernán González († 970) seized the area around Covarrubias and thus laid the foundation stone for the independent county of Castile from the Kingdom of León ; These successes from the early phase of the reconquest ( reconquista ) were temporarily nullified again at the end of the 10th century by the Muslim general Almansor († 1002). In the 11th century calm returned and so the place was gradually repopulated or repopulated ( repoblación ) . In the 12th and 13th centuries, however, the territorial dispute with the neighboring kingdom of Navarre intensified due to the Castilian successes .
