The mechanization of agriculture and the abandonment of small farms have led to a significant decline in the number of inhabitants since the middle of the 19th century.
economy
The inhabitants of Vileña live mainly from agriculture (arable farming and small livestock) in the fertile La Bureba region .
history
Celtic , Roman , Visigoth and even Moorish traces are missing. In 1222 Urraca López de Haro , the former mistress , but wife since 1187 and widow of Ferdinand II of Léon since 1188 , founded the Cistercian convent of Santa María la Real de Vileña in the remote valley , of which only ruins exist today. She designated it as her burial place ; later two other tombs were added. The monastery was destroyed by fire in 1970. The most important items of equipment, however, were saved and brought to Burgos.
