Location and climate

The place Padrones de Bureba is located on the Río Vadillo about 5 km west of the Montes Obarenes-San Zadornil nature reserve at an altitude of about 785  m . The city of Burgos is about 60 km (driving distance) in a south-westerly direction; the closest town is Briviesca (approx. 33 km southeast). The climate in winter is harsh, but in summer it is temperate and warm; the rain, which is abundant by Spanish standards (approx. 745 mm / year), falls mainly in the winter half-year.

The mechanization of agriculture and the abandonment of small farms led to a lack of jobs and a significant decline in the number of inhabitants ( rural exodus ) since the 1950s .

economy

In earlier times, Padrones de Bureba was a self-sufficient farming village in the fertile and therefore agricultural surroundings of the Bureba . The field work is done by only a few farmers today; some houses are rented out as holiday apartments (casas rurales) in summer .

history

No evidence has yet been found from the Celtic , Roman , Visigothic and Islamic periods. In the 8th and early 9th centuries, the area was under Islamic-Moorish influence, but the area was neither permanently settled nor defended by the Berbers because of the unusually harsh and rainy climate . At the end of the 9th century, the Castilian Count Diego Rodríguez Porcelos received from King Alfons III. of Asturias the order to repopulate ( repoblación ) the depopulated land. The first mention of the place name Miaraueg comes from the year 1156.

Attractions

  • The 15th / 16th Iglesia de San Mamés , built in the 17th century, is dedicated to St. Consecrated to Mamas of Cappadocia . The church portal is unusually on the north side. At some point the nave of the church was raised by approx. 1.50 m by a half-timbered structure that was visible from the outside . The 16th century altarpiece (retablo) is now in the Museo del Retablo in Burgos.
  • The two chapels Ermita de Santa Olalla and Ermita de San Martín are just outside the village. They are the target of processions once a year .
