Atle Sommerfeldt

Wilhelm Atle Sommerfeldt (born November 22, 1951 in Eidsvoll ) is a Norwegian Lutheran clergyman and theologian. Since 2012 he has been bishop of the Borg diocese of the Church of Norway .

Sommerfeldt studied Protestant theology at the Menighetsfakultet (parish faculty ) in Oslo and passed the theological candidate exam in 1982. After the vicariate in the diocese of Oslo , he became a consultant in the Mellomkirkelig råd (inter-church council) of his church in 1984 and served as its general secretary provisionally from 1987 to 1988. From 1989 to 1993 he was Deputy General Secretary of the Botswana Christian Council , then briefly again General Secretary of Mellomkirkelig råd . From 1994 to 2011 he headed the Norwegian church aid organization Kirkens Nødhjelp as general secretary (comparable to Bread for the World ). He has also held a number of honorary positions in Norwegian and international church organizations, including the Conference of European Churches and the ACT Alliance .

Sommerfeldt was appointed by the king in 2011 as the last Norwegian bishop on the proposal of the government and was appointed to his office on January 29, 2012 in Fredrikstad Cathedral .
