Bjørgvin diocese
The Diocese of Bjørgvin (Norwegian: Bjørgvin bispedømme ), German Diocese of Bergen , is a diocese of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Norway formed with the introduction of the Reformation in Norway in 1536 . The official seat of the bishop is in Bergen ; Bjørgvin is the original name of Bergen.
history
The diocese is the successor of the original Catholic diocese , which was founded in 1068 on the island of Selja in what is now the municipality of Stad and later (formally in 1170) relocated to Bergen ; thus it is with the diocese of Nidaros the oldest diocese in Norway.
The cathedral in Bergen , built in the 12th century, is the cathedral of the diocese.
scope
The diocese comprises 182 parishes in 11 provosts (Norwegian prosti ) in the Norwegian Fylke Vestland . There are also 32 seaman's churches abroad. Almost 630,000 people live on the 34,083 km² of the diocese, of which 479,935 are members of the Church (figures from 2017).
Until September 1983, the Sunnmøre region in Fylke Møre og Romsdal also belonged to the diocese of Bjørgvin; it was then incorporated into the newly formed Møre diocese with its seat in Molde .
