The Evangelical Lutheran cathedral of Bergen ( norw. : Bergen Domkirke ., Dt and Cathedral of St. Olav , cathedral mountains ) is a religious building in Bergen , Province Vestland / Norway , from the 12th century. It is the cathedral of the Lutheran diocese of Bjørgvin .

Structure and construction history

St. Olav Cathedral was built around 1150 and dedicated to the Norwegian saint Olav II Haraldsson . The Romanesque nave and aisle were built towards the end of the 12th century. The stone-built long church has a length of 60.5 m and a width of 20.5 m. The cathedral church offers about 1000 seats.

During the reign of King Håkon IV , the church became part of a Franciscan monastery south of the church. The church burned down in 1248 and 1270. Under King Magnus VI. it was rebuilt in 1301. In the church, Magnus VI. also his last rest. Over the centuries the church has been redesigned again and again and, in 1537, after the destruction of the Munkeliv monastery, it was made into the cathedral. The square tower was only added in the 17th century. To the north of the choir is a late 13th century chapel.

In 1880 the church was extensively restored by Peter Andreas Blix and Christian Christie (1832-1906). The altar from 1884, which is modeled on a medieval reliquary , was also made by Christie . The pulpit and baptismal font date from 1883.

In the wall of the church tower there is a cannonball from 1665, from the battle in the Bay of Bergen .

The organ was built in 1997 by the organ building company Rieger from Austria. It is the 15th instrument in the history of organs in the cathedral since 1549. The instrument was built in the prospectus or case of the predecessor organ by Albert Hollenbach from 1891. The organ has 61 stops on three manuals and a pedal . The game actions are mechanical, the stop actions are electric.
