The place is on the Camino del Cid and on the Ruta de la Lana coming from Alicante and Valencia , a once important trade and pilgrimage route.
Location and climate
The place Santibáñez del Val is located in the Castilian plateau (meseta) on the Río Mataviejas at the foot of the 1392 m high Peña Cervera about 53 km (driving distance) southeast of the city of Burgos at an altitude of a good 940 m . The lovely town of Covarrubias is only 13 km to the north-west; the Abbey of Santo Domingo de Silos is located only 6 km to the east. Despite the altitude, the climate is temperate to warm; Rain (approx. 525 mm / year) falls - with the exception of the rather dry summer months - over the year.

The mechanization of agriculture , the abandonment of small farms and the resulting lower demand for labor have led to a significant decline in the number of inhabitants since the middle of the 20th century ( rural exodus ).
economy
The place was and is largely agricultural and self- sufficient, with cattle breeding and dairy farming dominating; wheat and barley are grown in some fields in the area. Day tourism within Spain has been an important source of income for the community since the middle of the 20th century.
history
In the Middle Ages the place belonged to a larger community association (Alfoz de Tabladillo) .
Attractions
- Santibáñez del Val
- The single-nave Iglesia de San Juan Bautista was built in the late 18th century, probably on the site of a previous building; the externally unadorned building has a bell tower (campanario) on the south side of the facade. Inside there is a sculpture with the realistic scene of the beheading of John the Baptist .
- In the center there are still several badly dilapidated stone houses.
- Barriosuso
- The hamlet of Barriosuso , located approx. 1 km to the south and incorporated in the early 19th century, has long since been abandoned. The Romanesque church ( Ermita de Santa Cecilia ) is one of the attractions of the region, which is rich in sights.
