Location and climate
The place Zazuar is located in the Iberian Meseta about 300 m from the north bank of the Río Arandilla , a northern tributary of the Río Duero , at an altitude of about 835 m . The provincial capital Burgos is about 87 km (driving distance) north; the distance to Aranda de Duero is about 13 km to the west, the lovely small town of Peñaranda de Duero is about 6 km to the east. The climate is temperate to warm; the rather sparse rain (approx. 475 mm / year) falls - with the exception of the summer months - over the year.
Toponym
The name Zazuar is probably derived from the Celtic or Celtiberian Aza-or , which means something like "rocky hill" or "stony hill".

As a result of the mechanization of agriculture and the resulting lack of jobs, the number of inhabitants has declined significantly since the middle of the 20th century ( rural exodus ). Today the municipality belongs to the poorly populated Serranía Celtibérica .
economy
From the Middle Ages to the first half of the 20th century, the place was the artisanal and mercantile center of several villages and individual farms in the area. Today - in addition to viticulture in the classified wine-growing region Ribera del Duero - tourism in the form of renting holiday apartments is the municipality's most important source of income.
history
The area around Zazuar was already settled in Celtic or Celtiberian times. However , there are no corresponding finds from Roman , Visigothic and even Moorish times . During and after the Islamic conquest of the Iberian Peninsula, the area depopulated, which was only recaptured in the early 10th century ( reconquista ) and repopulated ( repoblación ) under the Castilian Count Gonzalo Fernández de Burgos up to the Duero . A first castle (castillo) was built , but it was redesigned in the 16th century. The place name Sozuuar is first mentioned in 1177.
Attractions
- The construction of the huge Iglesia San Andrés began in the 16th century; however, it took about 200 years to complete. The tower with its domed crown with a lantern is rather unusual for the region. The three-aisled interior is spanned by rib vaults, which reveal clear references to Gothic ; only the eastern yokes are distinguished from the other yokes by more decorative rib patterns. Three baroque altarpieces decorate the apse and the east walls of the aisles.
- An imposing late-Gothic court column (rollo de justicia) , a symbol of municipal self-government, was set up in the middle of the semicircular Plaza Mayor . It also appears in the local coat of arms.
- Several wine cellars ( bodegas ) were driven into the slope in the past centuries.
- The Ermita de San Vítores is at the entrance to the village and dates from the 17th century.
