The mechanization of agriculture and the abandonment of small farms have led to a loss of jobs since the 1950s and, as a result, to a significant decline in the number of inhabitants ( rural exodus ).

economy

Agriculture, which also included some livestock (pigs, sheep, chickens), has always played the most important role for the population of the region; Crafts, trade and service industries developed on a small scale in the village itself. Several houses in the village are now rented out as holiday apartments (casas rurales) .

history

The place is first mentioned in the year 968, even if it is assumed that there were settlements in this area before. It is due to the nearby mountains ( Montes de Ayago ) that none of the various invasion groups ( Celts , Romans , West Goths , Moors ) were able to completely conquer the area: Each new wave of attack caused the respective inhabitants to flee into the mountains and settle there. After the conquerors had established themselves on the plain, exchanges of all kinds took place.

The further development and history of the place are closely connected with the Way of St. , it is said to be the westernmost outpost of the construction activity of St. Dominic of Calzada had a pilgrims ' hospice called San Lazaro (a pilgrims' hostel is located on the property again today) and is prominently mentioned in the pilgrimage guide in the Book of Jacob .

From 1822 to 1833 the place and its surrounding area belonged to the newly created province of Logroño , i.e. the La Rioja region.

Attractions

  • The 12th century church Virgen de la Calle ("Virgin of the Way") was in the 17th / 18th. Century largely renewed; A statue of the namesake is located above the portal on the south side. In the nave there is a remarkable ensemble of several baroque altars (retablos)
  • The Romanesque baptismal font , a masterpiece of sculpture from the 12th century, rests on eight bundled columns that merge into towers at the top; each tower shows three rows with four windows each. In the spaces in between there are house-like architectural forms. The entire representation is reminiscent of medieval notions of the heavenly Jerusalem . The upper edge of the basin is formed by a square braided band; in the middle there is a braided band with rounded shapes.
  • An unadorned court column (roller blind) without a capital rests on a stepped square pedestal.
