Columbrianos is a district of Ponferrada . It is located on the Camino de Santiago in the autonomous region of Castile and León .

Toponym

The place is mentioned in documents from 923, 928, 1043 as 1081 Columbrianos or Conimbrianos. This name is derived differently, but there is no clearly verifiable explanation.

  • Some historians believe that the place would have been repopulated by the Portuguese from Coimbra after the Reconquista and called it CONIMBRIGANOS for the sake of their old homeland.
  • It may also be derived from “columba” (dove) and thus resulted from the numerous pigeons and dovecotes in the area.
  • Finally, the name is traced back to the “Padres Columbinos” that are often found on the Way of St.

history

Columbrianos is one of the oldest settlements in the area, older than Ponferrada, which only gained importance after the bridge was built under Bishop Osmundo. The municipal area was significantly larger before Ponferrada was founded and included large parts of the city that was later founded. The pilgrims then passed the Río Sil between Santo Tomás and Columbrianos to get to the pilgrims' hospice that existed here at the time. In 1837 the place was incorporated into Ponferrada.

Worth seeing

  • Stefanskirche ( Iglesia de San Esteban ) from 1778, reconstruction of the tower in 1948 after a lightning strike and partial collapse
  • Sankt Blasien Chapel ( Capilla San Blas ) with a painting from the 18th century and a baroque relief of the Virgin of the Holm Oak ( Virgen de La Encina ), venerated in Ponferrada . Recently, the outside of the chapel was decorated with pilgrim motifs in honor of the passing pilgrims, executed by Amador Diéguez Ayerbe.
  • Manor house of the Tormaleo family ( Casa Tormaleo )
  • Manor house of the Regalao family ( Casa Regalao ), formerly also the seat of the municipal administration

economy

The Bierzo has very good conditions for agriculture: Surrounded by mountain ranges, it is sheltered from the wind and sunny, from Galicia it receives the necessary rainfall. The most important products are wine, fruit and vegetables, lettuce and flowers are grown in greenhouses, and livestock farming also plays an important role. With the increase in the settlement area, agriculture is decreasing overall and the number of people employed in Ponferrada is increasing.
