Due to the increasing mechanization of agriculture and the abandonment of numerous small farms in the second half of the 20th century, more and more jobs were lacking, which triggered an ongoing rural exodus. The municipality also includes the villages of Nistal , Celada and San Román .
economy
The town's traditional main livelihood is agriculture - grain thrives, but also fruits and vegetables that are grown on irrigated land; milk and meat production are also not insignificant. Many vacant houses have been converted into holiday apartments (casas rurales) .
history
The age of the place is unclear - some assume an already Asturian settlement; others see the Romans residing in Astorga (Asturica Augusta) as the first settlers. In any case, the Visigoths and Moors left no traces on the municipality. It was not until the Middle Ages that the place developed because of its location on a bridge on the Way of St. James (Camino de Santiago) , which may still come from Roman times ; in addition, one of the most important cattle driving routes in Spain ( cañadas ) ran along here.
Attractions
- An early Christian sarcophagus with scenes from the Old and New Testament found near San Justo is now in the National Archaeological Museum of Madrid .
- The late medieval parish church is dedicated to the early Christian martyr San Justo ; However, only the west facade with the towering bell gable (espadaña) remains of it . The nave and choir area were completely modernized at the end of the 20th century.
Surroundings
- Coming from Santibáñez de Valdeiglesia , shortly before San Justo, there is a wayside cross on a hill , the Crucero de San Toribio . Here St. Turibius , bishop of Astorga in the 5th century , who was expelled from office and dignity due to slander, sadly turned around and shook the dust from his sandals.
