Due to the increasing mechanization of agriculture , the abandonment of small farms and the resulting lack of jobs, many families and individuals migrated to the cities since the beginning of the 20th century ( rural exodus ). The municipality also includes the hamlets (pedanías) San Mamés de la Vega and Santiago de la Valduerna , each with around 100 inhabitants.

economy

Agriculture is traditionally at the forefront of the municipality's economic life. In the past, wheat, barley, wine and vegetables were also cultivated in protected locations; later potatoes were added. Today companies in the preservation and packaging industries as well as the service sector play important roles in the city's economic life.

history

In ancient times, Celts from the Asturian tribe settled in the area, who lived in the area between 29 and 19 BC. Was conquered by the Romans . It was due to a not unimportant road connection from the central Spanish highlands ( meseta ) with the cities of Salamanca , Zamora , Medina del Campo and others to Galicia . In the 5th century, a battle between the Visigoths and Suebi took place near La Bañeza , from which the Visigoths emerged victorious, but later migrated further south. In the 8th century Arab-Moorish armies penetrated as far as the north of the Iberian Peninsula , but by the middle of the 9th century the Christians under the leadership of Count Gatón del Bierzo pushed them back to the Duero border ( reconquista ) ; thereafter an intensive resettlement policy took place ( repoblación ) . Only the advances of Almansor caused unrest shortly before the turn of the millennium. In the Middle Ages - especially after the unification of the kingdoms of Castile and León in 1230 - Bañesa was an important trading and economic center.
